What Is a Supercharger?

At VT Superchargers, we’re all about extracting serious power from your engine—safely, efficiently, and reliably. One of the most effective ways to do that? Installing a supercharger. But what exactly is a supercharger, and how does it work?
⚙️ Supercharger Basics
A supercharger is a device that increases an internal combustion engine’s power output by forcing more air into the combustion chamber. The more air your engine receives, the more fuel it can burn—and the more power it produces. Unlike a turbocharger, which is powered by exhaust gases, a supercharger is driven directly by the engine (usually via a belt connected to the crankshaft).
🔧 How It Works
All superchargers perform one main function: compressed air = more horsepower. But there are different types of superchargers, and each has its own way of achieving that goal:
- Roots-type: Pushes air into the intake manifold using meshing lobes—great for instant boost but often bulkier and heat-prone.
- Twin-screw: Compresses air inside the housing for more efficiency and torque at low RPMs.
- Centrifugal (ProCharger-style): Uses an impeller to draw in and compress air, similar to a turbo, but driven by a belt—delivers smooth, scalable power across the RPM band.
- Electric superchargers: Rare but growing—these use electric motors to spin the compressor, offering boost without mechanical drag.
At VT Superchargers, we focus on centrifugal supercharger systems for their superior packaging, consistent high-end power, and daily drivability. They're ideal for both street builds and off-road applications where you want reliable, scalable performance.
🛠 Why Add a Supercharger?
Adding a supercharger is one of the most effective ways to transform your vehicle’s performance. Whether you’re looking for better towing ability, stronger off-road torque, or just more fun on the highway, a supercharger offers:
- ✅ Instant throttle response
- ✅ Up to 40% more horsepower
- ✅ Better torque at all RPM ranges
- ✅ OEM-level reliability when properly installed and tuned
